When muscles contract the nerves release a chemical messenger called acetylcholine at the junction where nerve endings meet muscle cells. Acetylcholine attaches to receptors on the muscle cells and causes the muscle to contract. BOTOX® is able to block the release of acetylcholine so muscle cells can no longer contract. When facial muscles are treated with BOTOX® and this occurs, patients see their wrinkles relax.
The inability of the muscles to move is caused by the cleaving of snare proteins that are essential for acetylcholine to be released to the muscle receptors. When the muscles are not as strong or active, they shrink in size, and expression lines soften. Strategic placement can soften lines while leaving mild movement intact for a natural look. BOTOX® can also minimize pores which results in smooth skin and a gorgeous glow!
What is Cosmetic BOTOX®?
BOTOX® temporarily relax the muscles responsible for fine lines and prevent the formation of new lines. Treatment areas include forehead lines, the 11’s, crow’s feet, brow lift, bunny lines, lip lines/lip flip, downward smile, dimpled chin, and neck lines. The average dose is 30-60 units and the average duration is 3 months.
Masseter (BOTOX®)

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is used for talking, eating, and swallowing. With daily clenching and grinding (bruxism), the joint can become the source of jaw pain, tension headaches, and neck/shoulder pain. The masseter muscles become enlarged and bulky with overuse from chronic clenching/grinding. Not only can one experience physical aching but the muscle itself enlarges which contributes to a more rounded appearance in the lower face.
BOTOX® injections relax the masseter muscles and help treat the discomfort related to TMJ disorder. Injections into the masseter slims the appearance of the lower face. By injecting your masseter muscle with botox it reduces the number of signals it sends to the muscle to contract & reduces the strength of the muscle. The average dose is 25-50 units with an average duration of 3-9 months.
Hyperhidrosis

Did you know hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating, can also be treated with BOTOX® injections? When injected into the areas that sweat such as the armpits, face, hands/feet, BOTOX® prohibits the nerves to signal the sweat glands so sweating does not occur. When injected at the hairline, it also reduces greasy hair. The average dose is 100 units and duration is typically 3-6 months.
Microtox

Microtox for the face and neck is a powerful adjuvant for skin improvement. Clinical benefits include: tightening, smoothing, pore size reduction, decrease in sebaceous gland activity, decrease in sweat gland production, and it can also serve as medical management for rosacea and acne. Our neck skin is thinner than our faces & is more sensitive. There is less collagen & elastin so thin, creepy skin is common with aging. With so much time on our devices in our virtual lives, tech neck (the horizontal lines along our neck), is starting earlier & earlier. Microtox is a beautiful rejuvenating treatment. Whether it’s for the face or the neck, BOTOX® is diluted and superficial blebs are injected into the skin about one centimeter apart from one another. The average dose is 40-50 units and average duration is 3 months.
FAQ
How long does the procedure take?
Your first BOTOX® appointment with Skin Synthesis will take 45 minutes to allow time for an in-depth patient consultation. Ongoing treatments will be scheduled for 30 minutes. During this time, your face will be cleansed, treatment dosing assessed, before photos taken, and then it is time for injection!
Is it painful?
Many say it feels like a little pinch. The needles used for injection are small insulin needles. We have some fun distraction techniques to hopefully make it an easy experience for you.
How long is the recovery?
There is no down time or recovery time following BOTOX® injections. You may resume normal activities immediately, however avoid rubbing/applying pressure to the injection treatment area, lying down within 4 hours of treatment, and avoid strenuous exercise, hot tubs and saunas for 24 hrs.
What results can I expect?
BOTOX® results are day by day. Some patients may see the impact of their treatment as early as 3 – 5 days, but the full effect takes 14 days. The recovery of muscle function is gradual and facial lines will become noticeable again 3 months after your treatment.
Do I need more than one treatment?
Every patient will metabolize BOTOX® at a different rate, but you can expect an average BOTOX® session to last about 3 months. We recommend pre-scheduling your appointments every 90 days. Quarterly treatments help keep our facial muscles smaller and more easily controlled with BOTOX® which means better results (and a better investment).
Am I a good candidate?
The following patients are not BOTOX® candidates: pregnant and breastfeeding women, patients with some neuromuscular disorders. If you have anaphylaxis to dairy, you cannot receive Dysport and if you have anaphylaxis to eggs, you cannot receive Botox.
