In 1987, ophthalmologist Dr. Jean Carruthers discovered the effects of Botox on facial wrinkles when a patient she treated for blepharospasm requested to have her forehead injected as well because of the improvement she observed in her periorbital region. She then begin to study the effects Botox had on other adjacent muscles in the face. At the same time, her husband, Alastair Carruthers (a dermatologist) was trying to provide anti-aging treatments to his patients and joined Dr. Carruthers in studying the effects of neurotoxin. Eventually in 1992 the Carruthers published a paper reporting that Botox injections improved glabellar lines. This became the legendary beginning of cosmetic treatment using neurotoxins for anti-aging effects.

For a nearly a decade dermatology, plastic surgery, and aesthetic providers experimented with Botox and studied the effects various doses and injection techniques had on fine lines and wrinkles in the face. In 2002, Allergan received FDA approval for Cosmetic Botox for glabellar lines (commonly known as the 11’s).
