When our muscles contract our nerves release a chemical messenger called acetylcholine at the junction where our nerve endings meet muscle cells. Acetylcholine attaches to receptors on the muscle cells and causes the muscle to contract. Botulinum toxin is able to BLOCK the release of acetylcholine so our muscle cells can no longer contract. The inability of the muscles to move is caused by the cleaving of snare proteins that are essential for acetylcholine to be released to the muscle receptors.  

Most neurotoxins take 48-96 hours to start to kick in but it takes 10-14 days for the medication to take full effect.
