Many successful women in my practice come to clinic seeking one specific treatment. What do you think Seattle’s female CEOs, directors, physicians, engineers, critical care nurses, and lawyers all ask for? To freeze their glabellar complex (the 11’s) with neurotoxin. Confident, strong, successful women are out there breaking glass ceilings and are doing epic things but sometimes how they are perceived by others does not match who they are or what they are doing.
These ambitious women are told they are intimidating, unapproachable, and difficult to work or communicate with. They do not identify as any of these things but suspect their “thinking face” is being interpreted as RBF. For many, they describe themselves in front of a computer and are likely subconsciously grimacing as they read and process information. But they have heard this “feedback” about their behavior (RBF) in performance evaluations and reviews; sometimes it’s the reason they didn’t get the job, or the promotion. They report “RBF” has limited them professionally and undoubtedly it is personally as well.
So we treat their 11s with neurotoxin. They do nothing else; they make no other behavioral changes at work and on subsequent evaluations they’re told by superiors [who are often coincidentally male] that they’ve made improvements and have become team players. Wow. True story. This has become a common phenomenon powerful women experience. I’ve yet to have a man come in & tell me he needs Botox for his RBF and it’s effecting his job performance & career trajectory. Instead, as they age men are often labeled as “silver foxes” and because of their fine lines and wrinkles, they have “sophistication and wisdom” but female counterparts get judged for these same physical changes.
This is real life in 2023. Within 100 milliseconds of seeing an unfamiliar face we have already made a judgment about a person. Read that again and digest that. 100 milliseconds. So it’s an important question – does your face match your insides? Do you appear approachable, competent, trustworthy, and attractive? Does the world see you as you really are?
For some of us neurotoxin ensures our faces do not misrepresent us professionally. It allows us to make positive impressions based on merit and rather than our facial expressions leading the conversation, our words do.
Welcome to 2023. The key to enhancing your work performance may be Botox.
